My horse is totally ignorant of my personal space. I have never NOT been able to stand my ground.?

I ask for space, I demand space and then constantly reinforce for personal space - then ...... 30 seconds later (if that) we go throught the same senario again???? Big tough Horse to ride and looking like he will be a top indurance horse but on the ground. SO DAMN HARD WORK!! any suggestions would help.
