If you use bleach or iodine drops to sterilize water, how soon after can you drink it?

Okay, I know you can boil water to sterilize it, but I have heard of dropping chlorine (chlorox bleach) into the suspect water, or iodine tablets. Doesn't bleach make you sick? how soon after using them, can you drink said water?
